The Wild Mile with Urban Rivers

Urban Rivers is restoring the Chicago River by reintroducing native habitat through floating gardens situated along the river’s edge. Their flagship project, the Wild Mile, sits along the north branch of the Chicago River. These gardens are composed of native wetland plants that provide food, shelter and habitat to local wildlife. The plants' roots play a crucial role in filtering excess nutrients, urban runoff, and other pollutants as the river flows downstream. In addition to the floating gardens, the Wild Mile provides space for the community to connect with nature by providing public access to the area along a floating boardwalk which meanders between the gardens. Community members are encouraged to participate in river stewardship through initiatives like the River Ranger program. This program allows volunteers to kayak along the river, monitor the health of the Wild Mile, and engage in cleanup efforts; fostering a healthier, cleaner, and more inviting environment for all forms of life.
